AND THEY LIVE IN ROW HOUSES

co-directed with Julia Haugeneder

A flm about the reciprocal relationship between architecture and social norms and the desire for spaces other than the nuclear family.

What role does the nuclear family play, which has established itself as the organizational form of production in capitalism, and what do we learn about it when we look at the architecture that emerged for families 150 years ago?

A materialist view in relation to architecture and the nuclear family shows that reproductive labor is production work that has been outsourced to the private sphere. In addition to concepts of love and care, a standardized image of socially accepted cohabitation also guides our longing to live in two to three-generation families. They promise peace and a retreat from the intense world outside the nuclear family. It becomes clear that capitalism has a specific way of organizing living together. Our film focuses on potential possibilities for liberation that can be examined in the history of social constellations.
For this film, Simon Nagy was invited to write an essay on the role of architecture in the sheer insurmountability of the socially dominant organization by nuclear families under capitalism.
